Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Beta Mu Chapter, 1947
The Bold and Beautiful Beta Mu Chapter was chartered on Friday, April 3, 1936 on the campus of Wayne University, now known as Wayne State University. On that lovely evening, seventy-two young women became members of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Organized at the Lucy Thurman Y.W.C.A. the Beta Mu Chapter was chartered by eight trailblazing women: Emma McQueen Johnson, Georgia Redd Adams, Louise Garrison, Demaris Lightener, Joetta Reddick McFall, Edith Garrison Pascal, Ida Pettiford, and Vivian Pettiford. We, the members of the Beta Mu Chapter are beyond grateful for the eight credited with charting the chapter.
The Beta Mu Chapter is energized and prepared to meet the needs of the Great Lakes Region through education, health and wellness, arts, economic legacy, and globally impactful initiatives to embrace our future to achieve the mission of our great sorority. Through the years, the Beta Mu chapter has been involved with the NAACP Life Membership, Toys for Tots, Yearly Health-O-Rama, Red Cross Blood Drives, Bone Marrow Donor Drives, and Prom Dress Drives.
With 84 years on Wayne State University's campus, the Beta Mu Chapter has welcomed many young women into the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The Chapter is advised and receives personal and professional sororal guidance from its graduate chapter, Alpha Rho Omega. In addition the Bold and Beautiful Beta Mu Chapter will continue along the path of community service, leadership, scholarship and sisterhood. Our goal to be of "Service to ALL MANKIND" is fulfilled locally, nationally and internationally.
